DESCRIPTION

As an ancient Goddess, long predating any conflation with Artemis and other Etruscan figures, Diana was an important deity to the Latin people. She is a Goddess of the moon, moonlight, all the wild things and creatures that find shelter there. Her main place of worship was the lake Nemi where she is known as Diana Nemorensis also known as Diana of the Woods. This sacred place served as an important counterpoint to civilized Rome. Diana is not only a protectress of mothers and infants, but also thieves and murderers (some believe particularly referring to runaway slaves who had murdered their Roman master to escape). Even after the Hellenization in later time Diana kept her strong associations with witchcraft and the Underworld.

Legend has it that there is a guarded oak tree at center of the grove of Diana's temple at Nemi. No one was to break off its branches save a condemned person who was seeking refuge under Diana. If he could this was considered a sign he could challenge the standing priest of the temple to ritual combat to the death Rex Nemerensis. Should he succeed he was seen as having Diana's favor and would serve as her priest and king of the sanctuary until the next challenger. The Oak tree is an appropriate tree as tree of sovereignty and resources bears the name "King of the Grove". It is a powerful wood of fertility, protection, prosperity, banishing of illnesses and a gateway to traveling different planes.
